Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family was also dominated by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as a single child. Scott was a graduate of her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. There, Scott worked at two different jobs while learning about secondary education. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. It was impossible to realize the dream after completing three years of study and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. The singer performed at an Roots concert. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experience performing. She was signed by the label's first artist.
